Turrialba is a bustling town amidst sugarcane, coffee fields and rainforest. Turrialba is often referred to as 'Little Switzerland', so named for its resemblance to Switzerland with many beautiful mountain vistas, waterfalls and cows used to produce the famous local cheese. The well known Turrialba Cheese is sold everywhere throughout Costa Rica. But Turrialba is most famous for the near-by Pacuare River, one of the best rivers in the world for white water rafting and kayaking.
Turrialba is a small city in the Cartago Province with an estimated population of 35,618 and 69,616 including the surrounding area (also administered by the Municipality of Turrialba).

If you enter Turrialba you will realize there is a lot of activity going on. It has many clothes shops and shoe shops and an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. Every Friday and Saturday there is a fruit and vegetable market where you can find local farmers selling a huge variety of their products grown in the surrounding areas.
The town has a small park in the centre where especially on Sundays the Turrialbeños like to hang out. There are various swimming pools and some nice bars and restaurants.
The people from Turrialba, the Turrialbeños, are very friendly, sociable and welcoming people. It is quite impossible to wait for the bus and not have had a chat with the person next to you, even if your Spanish is limited to the most basic of words... Also if you get lost or in need of anything, there is always someone willing to help you on your way.
